Understanding Lab-Grown Diamonds
REAL DIAMONDS. A DIFFERENT ORIGIN.
Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds created in a controlled environment using advanced technology. They have the same fundamental carbon crystal structure and the same essential physical and optical properties associated with diamond. The key difference between a lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond is its origin: one is grown using technology, while the other forms naturally within the Earth.
They are not cubic zirconia, moissanite or imitation diamonds. Once grown, lab-grown rough diamonds are cut and polished using the same jewellery-making skills used for natural diamonds, and their quality can be assessed using the familiar 4Cs: Cut, Colour, Clarity and Carat.
How Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Made?
A lab-grown diamond begins with a small diamond seed. Under carefully controlled conditions, carbon builds around the seed and develops into a diamond crystal. Two principal technologies are used in the industry:
CVD — Chemical Vapour Deposition
A diamond seed is placed in a specialised chamber containing carbon-rich gas. The gas is activated and carbon atoms gradually form layers of diamond on the seed, creating a rough diamond crystal.
HPHT — High Pressure High Temperature
This method uses very high pressure and temperature to create conditions in which carbon crystallises around a diamond seed and grows into a rough diamond.
After growth, the rough diamond is cut, polished and graded before it is set into jewellery. Both CVD and HPHT can produce gem-quality lab-grown diamonds.
Lab-Grown vs. Natural Diamonds
| Lab-Grown Diamond | Natural Diamond | |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Created in a controlled technological environment | Formed naturally within the Earth |
| Composition | Crystalline carbon | Crystalline carbon |
| Appearance | Diamond brilliance and optical properties | Diamond brilliance and optical properties |
| Hardness | Diamond hardness | Diamond hardness |
| Quality Grading | Assessed using the 4Cs | Assessed using the 4Cs |
| Key Difference | Origin and method of formation | Origin and geological formation |
To the unaided eye, comparable lab-grown and natural diamonds can look the same. Gemological laboratories use specialised equipment and testing to determine origin.
The 4Cs — Diamond Quality Made Simple
CUT
Cut describes how well a diamond’s facets are proportioned and finished to interact with light. It has a major influence on brilliance, sparkle and fire.
COLOUR
For colourless diamonds, colour grading generally describes the degree to which the diamond appears colourless. WhiteCraze uses EF colour across a majority of its collection, subject to the specifications of the individual design.
CLARITY
Clarity describes the presence and visibility of internal characteristics and surface features. A majority of WhiteCraze products feature VVS clarity diamonds; exact specifications are stated for each product.
CARAT
Carat is a measure of diamond weight, not simply its visible size. Shape, cut and proportions can make diamonds of the same carat weight look different when worn. WhiteCraze designs use a range of diamond weights depending on the product.
Why Choose Lab-Grown Diamonds?
Diamond Brilliance
Lab-grown diamonds give you the optical beauty, sparkle and durability expected from diamond, with a different origin story.
More Choice Within Your Budget
Because lab-grown diamonds are generally available at more accessible prices than natural diamonds with comparable specifications, customers can explore different diamond sizes, qualities and designs within a planned budget. Final jewellery pricing still depends on the diamond specifications, metal, design and craftsmanship.
Made for Modern Jewellery
Their accessibility makes lab-grown diamonds especially suited to the WhiteCraze idea of diamonds that can move beyond milestone-only purchases and become part of everyday jewellery, self-gifting and modern gifting.
Certified & Transparent
Certification helps document what you are buying. All WhiteCraze diamond jewellery is SGL certified, and the relevant product specifications are communicated with the jewellery as applicable.
What Does Diamond Certification Tell You?
A diamond grading report is an independent record of the characteristics assessed by the issuing gemological laboratory. Depending on the report type, it may identify the diamond as laboratory-grown and record details such as carat weight, measurements, colour, clarity and other grading information.
Certification is not a guarantee of future market value or investment return. Its purpose is to give you documented information about the diamond and greater confidence in what you are purchasing.
Lab-Grown Diamond Myths — Made Simple
“Lab-grown means fake.”
No. Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds. They should not be confused with diamond simulants such as cubic zirconia or moissanite.
“Every lab-grown diamond is the same quality.”
No. Just like natural diamonds, lab-grown diamonds can vary in cut, colour, clarity, carat weight and overall appearance. That is why specifications and certification matter.
“Carat means size.”
Not exactly. Carat measures weight. The visible dimensions of a diamond also depend on its shape, cut and proportions.
“A certificate guarantees resale value.”
No. A grading report documents diamond characteristics; it is not a promise of future value. WhiteCraze’s buyback, exchange and store-credit terms are governed separately by the applicable written policies.
What Should I Check Before Buying?
- Confirm that the product clearly identifies the diamonds as lab-grown.
- Check the diamond carat weight, colour and clarity stated for the design.
- Understand whether the stated carat weight refers to a single diamond or total diamond weight across the jewellery.
- Check the certification details supplied with the product.
- Check the metal, finish and jewellery weight — for WhiteCraze, this includes 925 sterling silver and 18K gold vermeil with 2.5-micron plating.
- Read the shipping, exchange, warranty and buyback terms before purchase.
The WhiteCraze Approach to Lab-Grown Diamonds
